| We would like to ask for
your help Over the winter months there has been a significant rise in the number of potholes being reported to us by the public. We are repairing the majority of these as quickly as possible but to improve performance and the standard of our repair we want to capture as many as possible which are not picked up by the public or inspection. This is where we would like to your help. Kent Highway Services are as of the 25 March 2008 putting into action a concerted effort of repair and improvement with regards to potholes and we need to ensure that these are being picked up and reported to us as quickly as possible. We will be sending out to your parish Council a pack and covering letter explaining more about the actions will be taking a number of reporting cards and a further supply of business cards with our fault reporting number on them. If you could help us please by reporting the potholes to Kent Highway Services, this would be very helpful. Susan Hollister Maidstone Liaison Officer Kent Highways Services 01622 798308 |

| Maidstone Borough Council contractors have
reduced the height of two high hedges in Hollingbourne. It’s
the first time the council has had to use direct action to reduce the
height of hedges that are causing an unreasonable nuisance. In this case the cost of the works will be recovered from the owner in due course and the council is considering whether to prosecute for failure to comply with the council’s notice requiring the works. Action could also be taken in future if the owner fails to maintain the two hedges at a reasonable height. Councils have powers to deal with complaints about high evergreen hedges over two metres high. If neighbours cannot agree a solution between themselves the aggrieved resident can submit a formal complaint to the council. The council can only investigate if the problem can’t be solved by talking or mediation between the neighbours. Each complaint is considered on the issues put forward by both parties. A site inspection is held and if the council decides that the hedge is too high, it can issue a notice ordering the owner to reduce the height of the hedge and to keep it below a given height. Failure to comply with a notice can result in prosecution and direct action to reduce the height of the hedge. The complainant is normally asked to pay a charge of £350 for the investigation although there are concessions for some people.
